  • The Worthless Adventures of Barry the Unicorn

    George Taffy

language (Huge Jam, June 22, 2015)
This is a whimsical and cute 500 word story that will be enjoyed by all those little people who love playing out with their friends."Barry had to be back by four so he wanted to make the most of the time, he was good at that.At the park Barry persuaded his friend to help him build a raft to look for the submarine which was underwater like it was meant to be. Soon Barry’s friend was finished with his go at using the controls of the bright yellow submarine; they found some sticks and vines to make the raft. Barry was good at cutting vines with his freshly polished and trusty horn. After ten minutes or so the raft was built."A note about the publisher:'Huge Jam' exists to promote reading and writing confidence in children and young adults. • They Learnt Not to Cough

    Scarlett Jewel Murray

eBook (Huge Jam, June 19, 2015)
Overall winner in Huge Jam's 2014 schools' competition. This is a thought provoking and moving narrative poem about a handful of students and their teacher. Although the poet is a year eleven student, this poem would have been worthy of publication had she been much older: it is reminiscent of Carol Ann Duffy's poem "The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High".Of her writing Scarlett herself has commented: ' teenagers especially would probably want to rebel against all the imposed rules by adults, and so the cigarettes symbolise this. At the same time there is an order of dominance within the children, because being bossy is not an adult trait but a human trait. "The three nameless main characters, each have two sides to them; they have the side that is the persona for everybody to see and the side that is for nobody to see. It’s not a negative to be two-faced; it’s human to be a billionth-faced. I choose the over-use of cigarettes because of the imagery it created, to learn not to cough in such polluted air would be a skill, and take an extremely tough persona—emulating life. "The ending could even be interpreted as a representation of how we abuse the environment, it has taught and nurtured us, but all it takes is one strong character to destroy it and then everybody follows. “The inspiration for this piece is difficult to pinpoint, my mind illustrated this scene and then kept sending me reminders until I wrote it down. Creative writing can be incredibly therapeutic as it enables one to unleash emotions while it also provides escape from the present; if you have the passion for writing then it is an injustice to yourself to not indulge in it, because of the emotional reward that it provides.'A note about the publisher:'Huge Jam' exists to promote reading and writing confidence in children and young adults. • Blue Marble

    Joseph Kinderman

language (Huge Jam, June 21, 2015)
Joseph Kinderman's descriptions speak for themselves:'It was very easy, Allson mused, to believe that the ocean he saw from the helm of his fishing boat was infinite. All four directions looked the same to him, a stunning contrast of blue and blue as the sky clashed with the docile ocean waves as if trapped between sheets of velvet. He was not incorrect in saying so either, after years of intense heat the ice caps had melted and land masses collapsed, causing the planet to become a continuous ocean, only dotted by mountain ranges of old earth that had now become the island archipelagos for the rich and wealthy. However as he bobbed on gentle sapphire waves which caressed the boat the ever present feeling of solitude loomed over him, there were no boats, no oil rigs, and certainly no fish.'This short story - part dystopia, part magical realism - shows what a sharp wit and determination can achieve ...A note about the publisher:'Huge Jam' exists to promote reading and writing confidence in children and young adults. • The Happy Prince

    Oscar Wilde

Paperback (Huge Jam, April 25, 2016)
Lovingly edited by Cassie Seddon, this is a beautiful new edition of Wilde's fairy tale. The Happy Prince was first published in 1888 and Oscar Wilde wrote it, along with his other fairy tales, for his two young sons Vyvyan and Cecil. It is just as important now as it was when it was written and it's impossible not be moved by the beautiful ending, or by the generosity and selflessness of the statue and the swallow. The story also contains a warm humour that young and old will enjoy and so is a gentle introduction to satire for those having it read to them as a bedtime story! (Its town councillors are probably still arguing.) Cassie Seddon provides an entertaining and personal 'editor's introduction' and Peter Davies has created a memorable image of The Happy Prince in his 'golden' days.

  • The Morgue

    Rachel Little

    (Huge Jam, June 22, 2015)
Little's story contains the mystery and psychology of everything Gothic. Will you guess the ending? (This was the key stage winning story in the publisher's 2014 school's competition.)"I held tight as though waiting for her to speak. Elegance coated her and radiated through the room resting upon everything. She somehow brought the room to life with pungent sweet scents of wild flowers growing in vast open fields. Daisies, sunflowers and luscious green foliage danced together in the air invading my nostrils. I slipped away, shuffling out the door unnoticed by colleagues absorbed in their work.I tentatively nudged the door open, slithering into the hallway only to be greeted by a melody of strangled sobs and moans floating down the hall. They scraped through the air slicing the strange sense of foreboding that hung there. A thick dense stone lay in my stomach, making it feel laden, sinking it to the floor. I could barely handle the weight that hunched my shoulders - caving me in. Sparks of dust were illuminated by light creeping in through the crack in the curtains."A note about the publisher:'Huge Jam' exists to promote reading and writing confidence in children and young adults.
